GENERAL
The crypt of the Holtzer family is one of the extraordinary, beautiful Art Nouveau tombs of the Szeged Jewish cemetery. Despite its ruinous state it still demonstrates the once outstanding social and economical stance of the family. Since the formation of the company in 1848, members of the Holtzer family had been involved in textile, fur and ready-made garment trade. The first renowned head of the company was Salamon Holtzer. The enterprise achieved its greatest success in the first half of the 20th century, at the time of Salamon Holtzer’s grandchildren Tivadar, Emil and Aladár. The family was at the forefront of charity work. For example, they initiated the erecting of the Széchenyi statue by Alajos Strobl on the main square of the city. They also bore two- thirds of the costs. In 1911, they were granted nobility with the forename ‘Bástyai’. The family was actively involved in public life; Tivadar Holtzer Bástyai was the greatest patron of football in Szeged. He established the football field of the Szeged Athletic Club. The family’s art patronage was also exceptional, their collection contained genuine delicacies by Hungarian painters, including Lajos Gulácsy, László Mednyánszky, János Tornyai and Lajos Károlyi. The well-known falconer Lóránt Holtzer, and the theatre director Ferenc Holtzer (Hont) were also members of the family.
