Alon D.

Since my childhood I explored my country to its length and width and the more I knew I felt I must learn more, which is why I studied Geography and History of Israel. In the kibbutz where I lived I taught geography but most of the teaching was outside. I guided young children and adults in various trails all over my beloved country. In 1996, I was appointed as manager of Hatzeva field School in the Arava which is part of the Israeli desert. The school deals with teaching and researching the natural habitat in the desert. I got a lot of experience guiding young students and adults in the wilderness of the desert. I completed my studies at the Ministry of Tourism and became a licensed Tourist Guide. I started guiding tourists all over Israel but my specialty is the desert.

In 2008 I hiked to the length of Israel on “Israel Trail” (at that time 940km and now more than 1000km). Since then I started guiding groups on Israel Trail, which about half of it pass through the desert and finish in the south on the shore of the Red Sea near Eilat. There are many beautiful trails in the mountains near Eilat where the geology is unique and the landscapes are extraordinary. I can walk the same trail hundreds of times and it will never be the same. The air, weather, colors, passing animals and of course the guided travelers – all give me sheer excitement as I do it again.

Arik H

My name is Arik. At the end of 2008, I had every intention of becoming a teacher at a typical Israeli high school. It was just after finishing my Bachelor’s Degree, given to me by the Hebrew-U in Jerusalem there I lived for beautiful eight years. There is no city that can compare to Jerusalem with all its complexities.

In 2009, While I was already working as a guide in the Holocaust Museum (Yad Vashem) in Jerusalem, I was looking for a local school where I could do my training as a starting teacher and officially get licensed by the Ministry of Education in Israel.

In one of those days, after I’ve just finished guiding a brilliant group of American students from Brown University my co-worker, that was teaching in an high school told me I should become a staff member as well and give it a try. Honestly I felt a little like Michelle Pfeiffer in her role ‘Dangerous Minds’. In other words that I am going to make a real change in their worldview entirely and transform them to love Literature just as I do.

I was working for hours and hours on end, perfecting my lesson plans at home; thinking about each and every word I am gonna tell them; showing them the conflicts the protagonists had experienced in the novels just like they do in their reality. I needed something more suitable to my character which is a free spirit. I wanted something more uplifting and engaging. But still in the same field of education and passing knowledge. So I went for dream and completed the official tour guide course by the Ministry of Tourism at the end of 2011. Yea!

Since then this is what I do! Being a guide for more than 10 years made me the happiest man ever. I get to know super interesting people, I have the chance to work with people that are keen on listening, without the formalities of a classroom. As someone that likes to travel, I know how stressful traveling could be! All those questions such as, did I pick the right hotel? Or if it’s your once-in-a-lifetime B’nai mitzvot event for your children. Or did I pick the right rabbi or that skilled photographer for the ultimate pictures? Are all those recommendations online are they really that good? So my friends! This is what I’m here for!

Apart from being your top-notch expert private tour guide that will reveal the beauties of this amazing piece of land. I’ll also narrate beautifully all these amazing stories that would come to life. I’ll be your chauffeur, concierge, photographer, and more.

Bruce Avishai

Bruce lived in the Boston, Massachusetts area and later graduated from Rutgers College with a degree in Political Science. He immigrated to Israel in 1972, where he has lived on a Kibbutz, worked as a guide in the Sinai desert, maintained a private farm for 10 years, and finally became a professional guide in 1991. Bruce’s first impression of Israel was that it is a most unique and sometimes indescribable place to be. Bruce’s personal journey and growth as a professional guide have only reinforced those feelings. He always desires to try to show people Israel’s “uniqueness”, in order for them to have true and lasting impressions of Israel. Bruce resides in Rehovot, just south of Tel Aviv, is a father of 3, and grandfather of 5.

Caesarea Maritima is an ancient city that was built by Herod the Great in 25–13 BC. It is located along the coast of Israel between Tel Aviv and Haifa, in a place formerly called Pyrgos Stratonos. This is also where Herod built his palace on a cliff overlooking the sea. Civil life of the new city began in 13 BC, when Cesarea was turned into the capital of Judea, and the official residence of the Roman procurators and governors. The remains of all major buildings erected by Herod lasted until the late nineteenth century. The remains of the medieval town can also be seen, which are the walls, the palace and the site of the cathedral crusade.

Modern Caesarea Maritima has a population of 4,500 inhabitants and it’s the only Israeli locality managed by a private organization, the Caesarea Development Corporation. It’s organized as a communal settlement, though not as a kibbutz or moshav. It is a city built in honor of the Roman emperor Caesar Augustus. Today it’s a small archaeological enclave declared a National Park with preserved Roman, Byzantine and Crusader ruins; also it has a Roman aqueduct and amphitheater.

The beauty of the Chagall Windows, the light they emanate and the perfection of Chagall’s work will be found at Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem. The twelve stained glass windows were created by the famous Jewish-French artist, Russian born Marc Chagall (1887-1985) as a present to the State of Israel and the Jewish People. You can visit the Chagal windows on a private tour of Jerusalem!

Most of the people who visit the site are not seeking medical treatment nor do they come to pray. They come in great numbers just to see this world-renowned work of art. These sets of windows made of stainless steel and measures approximately 3.5 m by 2.5 meters represent the Twelve Tribes of Israel that entered the Land of Israel under the leadership of Joshua.

They have arranged three windows on each side in the following order: Reuben, Simeon, and Levy on the east; Judah, Zebulon and Issachar on the south; Dan Gad and Asher on the west and Naphtali, Joseph and Benjamin of the northern wall. The entire window’s art is based on Jacob’s final blessing and in the same order, they were mentioned. In some of the windows appear some texts taken from the Book of Genesis.

Akko (Acre) Israel is an old city with a natural port at the northern tip of Haifa Bay. This natural port, standing at the end of the mainland route linking the wealth of the east with the Mediterranean Sea,has made Akko strategically important for thousands of years. As you wander through the old city, you are surrounded by buildings, tunnels, and walls, all from different periods in history.

Akko, especially the old city, is blessed with many attractions including the Inn of columns, the Knights Hospitaller wholes, The ancient fortifications, a colorful market and much more. Akko’s fabulous local market with the charm of an old city, don’t miss ou the excellent baklava sweets shop at the market!

Across from the mosque, you can walk down several levels and see how the Turks built many levels over the Crusaders city. The Knights’ Hall is the most beautiful of all, which was used by the Crusaders for ceremonies. Today the main hall is used for concerts.

Rachel Kaplan

Shalom ! I created European Jewish Heritage Tours in 1998 because I strongly believed that Europe was making amends for its terrible past, by investing in the rebuilding of Jewish communities across the Continent, and inaugurating new museums and Jewish centers in key European capitals.

As the European Editor of INSIDE Magazine, the quarterly published by The Jewish Exponent of Philadelphia, I had the chance to personally visit and write about many of these destinations and in so doing, found a fascinating Jewish legacy everywhere I went. I also discovered others through researching my four books: Little-known Museums In and Around Paris, London, Berlin and Rome.

The aim of European Jewish Heritage Tours today is to propose private customized tours for groups and individuals that offer an overview that both reveals the European Jewish past, and invites a discovery of Jewish life today. As the “Chosen People” we have the privilege and responsibility of knowing and honoring our heritage wherever it may be.
