Izmir Jewish Heritage Tour and Synagogue Visits

You will be/can be met at the Kusadasi or Izmir Harbor, Izmir airport, or even at your Hotel in
Izmir and Kusadasi. Then drive to the Karatas area in Izmir.

Visit Beth Israel
Synagogue:
The construction of the Bet Israel Synagogue started on 15 March
1905 upon the decree of Sultan Abdulhamid II, and it was opened to worship in
1907. Bet Israel is the largest, most magnificent, and ceremonial synagogue in
Izmir. However, the temple differs from the traditional Izmir style with its
building style and seating arrangement. It was not built with a central plan
but has been a double practice of Teva from the very beginning. Due to the
location of the building plot, the Ehal (the closet where the Torah rolls are
stored) is placed on the south wall instead of the east wall.

Dario
Moreno Street:
It is located on Dario Moreno Street. There are old
Greek houses lined up left and right in this beautiful street, named after the
famous artist Dario Moreno from Izmir and was formerly called Elevator Street.
There is also the house on the street where Dario Moreno lived for a while.
These houses, each of which has been transformed into small and cute cafes and
art workshops today, add a different spirit to the street.

The Historical
Elevator:
The Historical
Elevator is the best structure to catch the unique view of Izmir Bay with its
promenade at the top. The elevator was built in 1907 by Jewish businessman Nesim
Levi to overcome the topographical barrier between hill neighborhoods above sea
level. Then drive to Konak Square and visit the clock
tower;

Konak Square – Clock Tower- Kemeralti Bazaar:
Izmir Clock Tower, the symbol of Izmir, is the Ottoman Sultan II. It
was built in 1901 as part of the 25th-anniversary celebrations of Abdulhamid’s
accession to the throne. Kemeralti Bazaar is called a
well-established commercial area. This commercial square, which was started
from the Hisar Mosque built in Izmir in 1592, has grown more and more. Since
the 19th century, inns and covered bazaars have been located in the Kemeralti
Bazaar, which has been the liveliest trade point in İzmir. However, the shops
here were referred to as small businesses that local people were interested in.
Options such as blacksmith, coal maker, nail maker, spice and straw bazaar were
located in Kemeralti Bazaar in the past. Commercial shops in different areas
were also found at various points.

Havra Street:
Havra Street, named after the
many synagogues in its vicinity, was a lively shopping center where Kosher
(Halal) food was produced and sold. According to their beliefs, the Jews of
Izmir used to obtain a significant part of their food needs, such as meat,
fish, chicken, yogurt, cheese, and eggs from Havra Street. As with other foods,
wine production was produced in and around this street in accordance with
Kosher rules. You will also have the opportunity to taste the dishes in the
Sephardic cosine. End of the tour drive back to the hotel.

Jewish Tuscany Classic Tour

Walking tour of Florence and a visit to the Synagogue. The tour starts at the Colonna dell’Abbondanza in Piazza della Repubblica where the ancient Jewish ghetto and Renaissance market once stood. It was demolished when Florence became the capital city of Italy. As we travel through the city center, we reach the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral and the Baptistery where we can admire the Eastern door, better known as the Door of Paradise. We continue along via dell Oche. Two Synagogues once stood on this road – one of Italian extraction and one Spanish – before the Synagogue was built where we find it today. The tour now takes us to the Synagogue of Florence: the construction of this beautiful structure is the symbol of the Emancipation of the Jewish community in Italy. It was constructed between 1874 and 1882, and is, not surprisingly given the artistic context in which it was conceived, considered one of the most beautiful Synagogues in the world. The tour ends with a visit inside the Synagogue and the adjacent Jewish Museum.

Yuval De Joannes

My Name is Yuval De-Joannes. I live in Moshav Tzafririm in the Ella Valley and I lead tours throughout the country for over twelve years. My passion for traveling began in my early school days, when I’ve joined the school of environmental studies in the Negev desert. Upon completing my military service as a paratrooper, and traveling the world for a couple of years, I’ve joined Ben-Gurion University and started my academic life.

First, I’ve achieved a bachelor’s degree in Behavioral sciences, and then through Haifa university, a Master’s degree in Cultural Anthropology. My fieldwork took place in Ireland, on one of the Islands off the west coast, where I stayed for nearly two years. Upon my return, I tried to put into practice the knowledge of people and history I’ve gained and completed an International tour guiding course, conducted by the Open University, and another tour guiding course conducted by the ministry of tourism.

A third course I’ve completed was conducted by the ministry of education. Through the years I’ve received special expertise certificates, from the ministry of tourism in Christianity, Zionism, desert tourism and wine tourism. From here the road was open to a new career. I’ve decided to focus on Israel, and to put all my energy in exploring it in depth. For me guiding is a passion, if not a call. Every tour I take is different for me. Even if the sites might repeat themselves, they are always fresh for me, cause every time I see them through different eyes, the eyes of those I travel with.

When I’m not guiding I enjoy hiking in Israel and around the world, mountain biking and reading. I guide families and individuals in Hebrew, English and Italian, and offer a wide range of focal points – theological, archaeological, historical, botanical, geological and more. It could be a day tour or a full package tour, all customized to your needs and desires. I use a luxurious Mercedes van, so you can be sure to travel in comfort and safety.
