Tomb of Rabbi Akiva, a Leading Scholar and Sage

On a beautiful hillside overlooking the city of Tiberias stands the Tomb of Rabbi Akiva. The tomb is an important place of pilgrimage and worship for Jews, since Rabbi Akiva is one of the most beloved figures in Jewish history. As a symbol of perseverance, faith, and second chances, the rabbi was once illiterate and poor. He only began his Torah study later in life at age 40, yet still managed to become a renowned scholar. Rachel, his wife, supported him during those challenging early years, which was instrumental to his success.

At his tomb, you can pray surrounded by others seeking strength and healing. Many visitors light a candle (ner neshama) or leave a written note with a prayer. After you spend some time at the Tomb of Rabbi Akiva, you can also visit nearby gravesites. The grave of Rambam (Maimonides) is a few minutes’ drive away in Tiberias, or you can see the tomb of Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes a few miles south of town.

As a large contributor to the Mishnah and Midrash halakha, Rabbi Akiva was killed by the Romans for teaching Torah during the Bar Kokhba revolt. His contributions to the Talmud have made a lasting impact on the Jewish faith and history. Visiting the tomb of Rabbi Akiva is a must for every Jewish traveler looking to connect with their roots. “‘Love your neighbor as yourself — this is a great principle of the Torah,’” is one of the most famous quotes Rabbi Akiva was known for. His legacy lives on today thanks to the many pilgrims who continue to visit his tomb each year.
