Carniceria
Carniceria is the only kosher butcher shop in the city and is located in the Old Havana district on Acosta Street. The shop is privately owned by Abraham Berezniak and has been open for nearly 70 years. It provides kosher beef to the country’s Jewish community, but non-Jewish residents as well. A privately owned store is somewhat rare these days because after Castro’s 1959 Revolution, most private businesses were nationalized. Some of the locals believe that the government allowed the butcher shop to remain open to avoid claims of anti-Semitism. Eating meat in Cuba is not trivial. Cows are the property of the state, and Cubans go as far as to say it’s a far worse crime to be caught slaughtering a cow than a person. The shop is managed by Adath Israel, the city’s Orthodox synagogue, and the synagogue’s cantor is the only shohet in the city.
Sandwich Soso
Soso Taweel opened his humble stand in 1952, and passed the well-guarded secrets of the ingrediants and prepration of a hearty Tunisian sandwhich on to his admiring son Yaacov and his wife, who now run the stand. Each sandwhich is served on a soft, white baguette, freshly baked at the pâtisserie next door.
Miri’s Sandwich
Amongst the chaos of stalls lining the alleyways of the exciting Beer Sheva market, those in the know will direct you to a small Tunisian fricassée stall- Sandwich Miri. This little corner is usually inhabited by regular customers. In the midst of the commotion of the small kitchen, Miri prepares all types of stuffed vegetables and fried treats. Her famous stir fry, which keeps customers coming back day after day, is available in a fresh baguette with a side of juicy olives. Tunisian shakshuka is served straight from the pan, for the perfect lunchtime meal!

For decades, Lupo has conquered the realm of homemade fish, preparing botargo (a cured fish roe, typically from tuna), bonito (popularly eaten grilled, pickled, or backed), and soused herring (with a mild marinade). In 1947, Yomtov Levy had already opened a delicatessen in Turkey. When he arrived in Tel Aviv in the sixties, he envisioned his deli opening once again. Yom Tov Deli proudly serves homemade marzipan, jam, and almond cookies. On the savory side, cheeses, salads, and pickled fish quench patron’s appetites.
