Padova Jewish Heritage Walk

The presence of a Jewish presence in Padova dates back to the 1200s. The Jewish quarter, or ghetto, is set in the heart of historic Padova, just off Piazza delle Erbe. Our Jewish Heritage walk will provide you with an overview of Jewish life in our city throughout the centuries, leading up to today.
Your visit begins at the Jewish Museum of Padova as an introduction to the history of the community. The museum is located in the former “German” Synagogue, used by the Ashekazic community, which dates back to 1525. Leaving the museum, your guide will accompany you through the narrow cobblestone streets of the Jewish Ghetto, in the heart of historic Padova, dating back to medieval times. See where the Jewish community was forced to live from approximately 1603 to 1797.

Next you will visit the Italian rite Synagogue of Padova, the only one still in use of the several that functioned from the Renaissance up to World War II. It dates back to 1584 and has gone through many renovations since its original construction.

Your program will conclude with a visit to the Jewish cemetery on via Wiel, the oldest of such cemeteries in the city, dating back to the 16th century.

Particularly beautiful is the Rose Garden (fr. Roseraie) in the western city. This was created in 1900 and is home to about 450 different kinds of roses, which can be seen between mid-June to mid-September.

Just 5 km outside the city walls stands the ruins of the mighty castle Haut-Barr Castle on the Mountain of Haut-Barr about Alsace. The fantastic view owes ruin the nickname “eye of Alsace”. The castle was built around 1170 and severely damaged during the 30 Years War, after a renewed building in the 18th century, the castle fell into ruin but. In the connected timber-frame building is a nice restaurant, where you can fortify yourself after visiting.

Visit The Jewish Alsatian Museum

“Artefacts and places recount history better than books” – this sentence welcomes you as you arrive at the Jewish Alsatian Museum. Located in the former 19th-century synagogue of Bouxwiller, the museum is unique in its kind. It highlights the culture of Jews in Alsace and recounts their history, telling of everyday life through the ages with their Christian neighbours. Visitors follow a trail around the museum with its original, varied presentations ranging from the reconstitution of life-size scenes and miniaturised tableaux using new technology. Ceramic models, architectural models, life-size figures, dolls in period costume and video films alternate with antique artefacts, which are all the more rare as much of the Jewish heritage disappeared during the Holocaust.
