Church of the Holy Sepulchre: Where Jesus Died and Rose Again

For well over a thousand years, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has been one of the most sacred places in Christianity. Built on the site where Jesus died and rose from the dead, the church has become a destination for millions of Christians looking to connect with their faith.

Visiting the church is an incredibly sacred and moving experience for Christians, who believe Jesus died for their sins. Many visitors begin their journey to the church by walking the Via Dolorosa, the path Jesus walked through Jerusalem while carrying his cross to be crucified. The end of the Via Dolorosa culminates at Golgotha (Calvary) inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. On your visit, you can first see the Stone of the Anointing and take a moment to kneel and pray. Then, visit and touch the burial slab within the Edicule. Both offer the opportunity to connect with Jesus’s sacrifice and remember his suffering. Planning your visit on a holiday like Christmas or Easter can also be very special, when hundreds of Christians gather for mass every year.

It’s debated whether the Rock of Calvary in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the actual location of Jesus’s crucifixion. Olive trees and grapevines – dating back 2,000 years – were found at the church, matching passages in the New Testament that describe a garden near where Jesus was crucified and buried. Whether you believe Jesus was crucified here or somewhere else in Jerusalem is up to personal interpretation.

If you’re looking to connect with your faith, a visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is a must. However, people of all religions can enjoy an unforgettable visit to this church filled with history and beauty.
