Via Dolorosa: Walking in the Footsteps of Faith

The Via Dolorosa, one of the world’s most significant pilgrimage routes, is the path in Jerusalem’s Old City that Jesus is thought to have walked while carrying his cross on the day of his crucifixion. Latin for “Way of Suffering,” the Via Dolorosa is marked by the 14 Stations of the Cross, starting at the Church of Flagellation and ending at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

The route that exists today was created in the 18th century, based on knowledge of the events of Jesus’ crucifixion. Along the 600 meters (2,000 feet) of the Via Dolorosa, each one of the 14 stations signifies one of the final events in the life of Christ. The profound meaning behind each station has greater weight for believers than the historical accuracy of the location of the events.

For Christians, the experience of walking the Via Dolorosa is both spiritual and physical. Starting the day early before the crowds, you can follow in Jesus’ footsteps as he takes up his cross, meets with his mother, and falls. Along the pilgrimage, step inside chapels for prayer and admire the ornate sanctuaries along the way.

Deep reflection is common among many who walk the path of the Via Dolorosa. The pilgrimage is an unforgettable way to celebrate the Christian faith and honor Jesus’ sacrifice.

🌍 Celebrating One Year of the Jewish Silk Road Portal

World Jewish Travel was thrilled at #IMTM 2024 to present a copy of the WJT Jewish Silk Road Pressbook to the CEO of the Azerbaijan National Tourism Board Florian Sengstschmid and Jamilya Talibzade its Israeli representative Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB).

The Pressbook celebrates the one year anniversary of the Jewish Silk Road Portal launch, an amazing example of using Jewish travel as a means of cultural diplomacy, whilst highlighting the significant Jewish contribution to the ancient trade route. Kudos to our participating partners from the Kiriaty Foundation (Turkey), National Board of Tourism of #Georgia, National Board of Tourism of #Uzbekistan, and Israeli Embassy of #India.

See the overwhelming reaction from the press, by downloading our free pressbook. Special thanks to Moshe Gilad of the @haaretzcom for highlighting this forgotten but important story in the Galeria section of the newspaper and available to download on WJT.
